Collins Chapel is Making a Difference
Over the years, Collins Chapel CME Church has learned the key to successfully developing the children of their congregation is to provide a Youth Ministry that includes a variety of educational and fun activities/programs to appeal to a diverse group. In addition to the activities, Collins Chapel has focused their efforts towards creating an atmosphere of love and strongly encourages mentoring for the children. It is possible that an environment heavily geared towards child development at Collins Chapel may be attributed to having a congregation with almost half of its membership comprised of active and retired educators.
The programs and activities offered by Collins Chapel include Sunday School, Youth Choir, Praise Dancers, Annual Picnic, Community Involvement, Summer Reading and College Scholarships. The Church offered a week long Vacation Bible School Program in partnership with First United Methodist Church. The VBS Program included Bible study, recreation, music, craft, a cook out, an ice cream sundae night, snow cones and snacks. If that wasn't exciting enough, on the final night of VBS, every child received a real live goldfish in a fish bowl previously decorated in Arts & Crafts. The children enjoyed the attendance of a Memphis Redbirds Game on Fireworks Night. As a new program enhancement, Collins Chapel sponsored Tee Ball and Coach Pitch Baseball Teams for the summer through Tri-State Youth Baseball Academy, Inc. For their efforts, each participant was awarded a Baseball Medallion. If the children were artistically inclined, The Collins Chapel Theatre School in partnership with Playhouse on the Square offered an 8-weeks class in acting, music and dance. The students performed their Final Showcase at the Circuit Playhouse. Also, every student was awarded a "Drama Trophy" for an outstanding performance.
